COMPUTER AND ITS CHARACTERISTICS

A computer can be defined as an electronic device that takes input from its user, stores, processes data and generated the required output as per the processing instructions given to it by the user.

Characteristics of Computer

  • Accuracy

Computer system always produces accurate results with valid data and instructions. The degree of accuracy provided by a particular computer depends upon its design. Errors can occur in a computer but they are generally due to human being and not the technological weakness.

  • Versatility

Versatility means that computers can do a variety of jobs depending upon the instructions given to them e.g. a computer can be used to open a website on one hand and in parallel can be used to edit a document and can also be busy with some search operations. So, it can be used to carry out multiple jobs at a time.

  • Speed

Computers can process millions of instructions per second. Computers can do complex tasks in fraction of seconds. The speed of computer is increasing day-by-day.

  • Storage capacity

A computer can store and re-call any information as and when required and can be retained as long as desired by the users. Computer does not make any guess or approximation.

  • Productivity

Computers increase the productivity many times by reducing the repetativeness needed in type writers, Xeroxing to be replaced by scanning and replacing human workers with a single machine. The total output of the same organization is set to enhance with the computer software aimed to generate better results.

  • No intellectual power

Computers does not process any intellectual power, only a user can determine what task a computer can perform as computers cannot take its own decisions.

  • Reduction in cost

Computers reduce the cost of paper work, labour and enhanced productivity. Computers contribute to the economy of the organization by reducing the cost of the goods and services.
